Clinostats and Centrifuges in Gravitational Biology

In order to subject a variety of model biosystems such as small plants, aquatic animals, unicellular organisms as well as cell cultures as diverse as possible to conditions of hypergravity and/or simulated microgravity, we have constructed different facilities, which allow an optimal environment of these biosystems to experimental conditions. Different clinostats and centrifuges are in use, which can be adjusted in temperature and mode of operation. This allows to carry out both short-term as well as long-term experiments, with the latter focused on multi-generation experiments on cells or developmental processes of multicellular organisms. An activation of physiological processes as well as chemical fixation during operation of the clinostat is also possible, thus avoiding unwanted side effects generated by 1g Earth gravity.
