The Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures focuses its research and development work on "resilience of maritime systems" and "maritime safety technologies". It pursues its social mission of protecting critical infrastructures that ensure our economic prosperity and stability. The starting point for this is the analysis of existing systems and technologies used in the event of current and emerging threats. Even in complex systems the level of resilience can ultimately be measured and assessed with appropriate analysis methods and performance indicators. These findings will feed into design, optimisation and validation tools that are used to enable a technological and systemic design of infrastructures according to the concept of Resilience by Design. Newly designed system concepts and designs are technologically implemented and tested in practical conditions. The aim is to generate real-time maritime situational images. To do so, the Institute will, together with its partners, address a large number of technological issues, including improved sensor systems, data and information fusion in spatially distributed systems, intelligent data management and the provision of reliable analysis and guidance systems.
