Safety first! While arguably constituting a core principle of aviation, safety is not limited to technological accuracy. Human factors play an equally important role. Aside from flight crew training, a key element to understanding the impact of human factors is maintenance. Maintenance-related costs are vastly underestimated, when human factors are ignored and perfect repair is assumed. Instead, human factors have to be taken into account, making “imperfect maintenance” a much more realistic approach. Researcher Vida Kohestani Nejad of the DLR Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul presents her paper on the effects of imperfect maintenance and a model enabling the assessment of maintenance effectiveness at this week’s European Safety and Reliability Conference (ESREL).
