Even outside Europe, our experts are highly demanded for complex projects – especially when interdisciplinary expertise is needed. For example, in the construction of scientific structures and local expertise to combat climate change in Africa.
The BMBF-funded initiative ‘Regional Science Service Centres in West and Southern Africa’ is aimed specifically at this area. After all, Africa is the continent most severely affected by climate change, despite its low pollutant emissions. Supported by our experts, BMBF has joined with 15 partners from African countries to establish a regional excellence centre in western and southern Africa. The capacity building of the centres enables researchers to develop sustainable land management that accommodates the constraints of climate change. Moreover, the excellence centres operate as educational institutions for young scientists from throughout Africa, as well as being information points for regional and international research activities.
At the DLR Project Management Agency, we not only developed the implementation concept, but also continue to support the competence centres. Thanks to our international competency, we are able to support the strategic and political goals of the project funding even beyond the excellence centres themselves, extending the range to include all of Africa – both in the field of climate research and in other disciplines such as health research.
