Electric vehicles enable quiet and emission-free mobility within a local setting. At the moment, however, they are comparatively expensive and limited in range. But in terms of its promise, electromobility offers the possibility for carbon-neutral mobility as a connecting link between renewable energy sources and the transport sector. Electric vehicles have the capacity to make a particular contribution to a successful energy turnaround, as they could be charged with electricity from renewable energy sources and be used as mobile storage facilities in the stabilisation of power grids in future.

A large number of industries are working on electrifying the powertrain and on integrating electric vehicles within the energy grid. This presents a particular challenge to the German automotive industry and its roughly 800,000 employees within the domestic market. They are asked to accomplish this transformation within an extremely tight schedule while still defending their pre-eminent position at the apex of global competition. A similar situation applies to the mechanical and power plant engineering sector, as well as the energy industry. All of these economic areas are of immense importance to Germany as a hub of industry, technology and employment.
This is why developments to make electromobility commercially viable and to contribute to the energy turnaround through new transport concepts receive funding. Our experts at the DLR Project Management Agency support the German government in the three funding priorities of developing vehicle powertrains, in ICT for electromobility and in strengthening the electromobile value chain.
