Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) populate the ICT industry. Here, even small IT companies invest substantially more in the research and development of new products than companies of an equivalent size in other industries. These research-intensive companies receive support from the ‘SME innovative: ICT’ funding initiative.
At the DLR Project Management Agency, our ‘Information technology’ work group assists this initiative, supporting the SMEs in their attempts to turn their collaborative developments with universities and research institutions into marketable products.
Here, over 200 projects with more than 630 partners have been completed on the ‘software systems and science technologies’ topic alone. An evaluation of the funding measure conducted by a prestigious business research and consultancy company confirmed the success of this financial support, indicating that the majority of companies had achieved a measurable increase in revenue thanks to the funding they received. Most of the companies believe that the project results will have an important impact on their business – e.g. a new business field, new customers or partners, follow-up business, new qualifications competencies, or improvements in the company’s ability to attract qualified recruits.
