As the DLR Project Management Agency, we support the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the research infrastructure sector. We assist major infrastructure committees in fundamental natural science research on a project-by-project basis, as well as support strategic European and international committees for research infrastructure. These are specifically the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), the Group of Senior Officials for Research Infrastructures (GSO), and the OECD Global Science Forum.
ESFRI was founded in 2002 by the European ministers of research to support a coherent, strategy-led approach to research infrastructure policy in Europe. In 2004, the forum received a mandate to develop a roadmap for European research infrastructure to cover the scientific needs of the next 10-20 years. The mandate was renewed and continued in 2012. Hence, ESFRI also supports the implementation of the ESFRI research infrastructures.
The GSO was founded in 2008 at the first G8 Ministerial Meeting in Okinawa, Japan. The group has the objective of exchanging ideas on planned research infrastructures of global relevance, creating principles for the development of new partnerships, and developing a platform for a coordinated approach.
The project-specific committees for the following ESFRI projects are legally and technically supervised by us in our capacity as the DLR Project Management Agency in support of the BMBF: the European Spallation Source (ESS Neutron), the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI).
Furthermore, as the DLR Project Management Agency, we provide technical support for the following EU committees: the H2020 programme committee for research infrastructures, the H2020 Expert Advisory Group on Research Infrastructure and the European Research Infrastructure Consortium committee (ERIC). In addition, the National Contact Point for Research Infrastructure, administered by us in our capacity as the DLR Project Management Agency, advises applicants on research framework programmes and contributes to the development of aspects of research infrastructure of the Horizon 2020 work programme.
