The German Literature Archive Marbach, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel are three outstanding research institutions where large collections of our cultural heritage are stored. In order to jointly showcase these very similar, yet sometimes extremely fragmented, collections and fund their research, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel Research Association (MWW) in 2013 for an initial period of five years.
The aim of this research association is to generate momentum for research in humanities and cultural studies by means of innovative research projects and exhibitions. Three research projects are at the heart of the association. These promote networking between institutions by addressing current issues in text, image, literary and media studies, as well as in the history of ideas and science, and combining them with collection-related research perspectives. The key factor: scientists establish a virtual research environment that helps to showcase the digital collections, thereby opening them up for global research. For this, the association must first develop common technical standards and interfaces, along with an online platform.
The DLR Project Management Agency implements the funding for this project, which is tailored to our associated partner's individual needs, on behalf of the BMBF. A great deal of effort goes into the common understanding of approaches and challenges. Through our work, we are helping to prepare the institutions' valuable cultural heritage for future research via innovative research environments.
