Big data extends from the recognition of critical situations and industrial manufacturing, to the evaluation of heterogeneous newsfeeds and even the analysis of satellite data to investigate the Earth’s surface, for instance to show the effects of climate change.
Two excellence centres, 10 research projects, and one accompanying research project currently receive funding, which we manage here at the DLR Project Management Agency. The ‘Berlin Big Data Center’ develops highly innovative technologies to structure huge data volumes. This is then taken as a basis for substantiated decisions aimed at creating added value for the business community and society as a whole. The centre seeks to blend the previously isolated fields of ‘data management’ and ‘machine learning’. In contrast, the research conducted at the ‘Competence Center for Scalable Data Services and Solutions’ in Dresden/Leipzig focuses on ‘data quality and integration’, ‘knowledge extraction and visual analysis’, and on the topical areas of ‘efficient big data architectures’ and ‘big data life-cycle management and workflows’.
