The DLR team and the European Space Agency (ESA) will jointly operate the LUNA analog facility in Cologne, Germany, which is scheduled to be built and outfitted in 2022/2023.
The LUNA facility will support the development, testing and simulation of new tools and equipment as well as new operational concepts for future human missions to the Moon and later to Mars. LUNA comes with a 700 square meter large regolith area – including a deep floor area, a dust chamber, an airlock, a technical gas lab, a workshop and several preparation and storage rooms.
