25.12.2011 - Christmas in Space
"Driving home for Christmas" - that will not be the case this year for the Dutch astronaut André Kuipers. For him, it is the opposite. He will literally fly to the end of the world and beyond, to celebrate Christmas on the International Space Station - far away from his family and his four children.

08.12.2011 - DLR tests Australian spacecraft
Can new types of engine make spaceflight easier and more economical? This question is being investigated by researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) using one of Europe's leading hypersonic wind tunnels, located in Göttingen. The engine is being tested for an Australian Scramjet-based Access-to-Space Systems (SCRAMSPACE) experimental spacecraft – SCRAMSPACE I – scheduled for launch in 2013.

23.11.2011 - Mapheus-3 – spherules, metals and microgravity
First, it is launched into space at 5400 kilometres per hour, then come three and a half minutes of weightlessness, and finally it lands using a parachute. Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) are sending four experiments to high altitude on the Mapheus 3 (Materialphysikalische Experimente unter Schwerelosigkeit – Material Physics Experiments Under Microgravity) sounding rocket to investigate the properties of metals and granular gases.

08.06.2011 - Good night, Rosetta – European comet chaser goes into hibernation
On 8 June 2011, the Rosetta spacecraft will be put into hibernation after having travelled through space for more than seven years. To reduce energy consumption, the European probe will be flying in 'economy mode' as it heads towards its destination, the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. But this will be no break for researchers at the German Aerospace Center; they will continue to train in preparation for Rosetta's arrival in May 2014. Six months after reaching the comet, Philae, the Rosetta lander, will become the first spacecraft to land on a comet.

08.02.2011 - TerraSAR-X-image of the month: Calving icebergs on Queen Maud Land
If the city of Bonn were located on the edge of the Fimbul Ice Shelf, in the Antarctic, its inhabitants would now be embarking on a journey through the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. An iceberg the size of Bonn – with a surface area of 120 square kilometres – has calved in the Atlantic. Glaciologists at Hamburg University's Climate Campus have been using the German Aerospace Center (DLR) radar satellite, TerraSAR-X, to observe the area from an altitude of 500 kilometres and gain a better understanding of how icebergs like this will calve in the future.
