The interdisciplinary project develops novel concepts for human-robot collaboration in the factory of the future. On the one hand, the goal is to develop intelligent planning algorithms to cope with the complexity in value creation. On the other hand, empowerment aspects in production are to be taken into account in order to motivate humans in their work.

Project details

Due to customized mass production, flexibility in production is becoming increasingly important. The development of "mixed-skill factories" in the EmPReSs project is intended to demonstrate this flexibility with the help of innovative human-robot collaboration. Intelligent, flexible planning and new forms of collaboration between humans and robots enable new paths of division of labor and thus empowerment of humans through collaboration with robots.

In the EmPReSs project, novel concepts for human-robot collaboration in factories are being researched. The central question is how these new technical systems can contribute to an empowerment of employees and a humanization of work in production. The scientific challenges in EmPReSs are multifaceted. On the one hand, uniform and formal modeling of process step requirements and capabilities and competencies of humans and robots must be developed. On the other hand, the special characteristics of human work have to be captured and transferred into an intelligent process planning. In this context, different aspects of empowerment will be elaborated and integrated into the cooperation of humans and robots by means of technical models.

The goal of this research project is an interdisciplinary and conceptual feasibility study for the design of "mixed-skill factories" based on an innovative collaboration of humans and robots. In this context, existing technologies and tools are analyzed and adapted from a technical-scientific perspective. Particular focus is placed here on more flexible production planning and intuitive control of the robots. On the other hand, from the perspective of the sociology of work, the resulting scope for shaping technology, organization and work will be examined. A central aspect in both perspectives is the empowerment of employees in order to create a basis for the humanization of work. The opportunities and risks of a new type of collaboration must be systematically analyzed so that "mixed-skill factories" lead to both a flexibilization of production and an empowerment of employees.
