Scientific Visualization

Scientific visualization and virtual reality (VR) are key technologies for many research activities at DLR. To support those projects, the Institute for Simulation and Software Technology investigates and develops methods and applications for interactive visualization and immersive environments. The following topics are primarily covered:

Interactive visualization of a fluid flow in a turbojet engine

  • Interactive post-processing of large-scale datasets
    • for the analysis of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
    • for the analysis of multi-spectral planet surface measurements
  • Distributed approaches for post-processing and rendering used for interactive analysis in virtual environments

  • Photo-realistic rendering for scientific visualization in virtual environments

  • Intuitive human-computer interfaces considering two-hand metaphors and multimodality for efficient interaction with scientific-technical data in immersive environments

  • Virtual prototyping of spacecraft systems including the functional simulation of individual system components over time and its visual result presentation

  • Physical-based assembly processes in order to allow virtual training of maintaining services of spacecraft systems considering haptics and tactile feedback information

  • Augmented Reality for astronaut training

  • Investigation of psychological aspects of long-time missions by means of virtual environments
