Earth System Sciences strongly depend on data comparison. These data, resulting from observations or modelling studies, are distributed over many archives, and vary tremendously with respect to accessibility and quality. At the same time, the volume of the data continuously increases. For these reasons it is often cumbersome and inefficient to search, find, collect, quality control, compare, and visualize data for researchers.
Thus, a common platform with uniform access and standardized data description was needed to support the scientists in using these data to explore and explain the Earth system
The project "Collaborative Climate Community Data and Processing Grid - C3-Grid" developed solutions for easy access to heterogeneous data archives as well as processing resources. A uniform data description allowed the users to handle and structure the increasing amount of data intelligently. At the same time goal-oriented access to quality controlled data was enabled.
Using grid technologies, a new infrastructure was constructed. It allowed users to access and manipulate Earth system data and provided combined storage and processing facilities in the German climate community.
Users can thus manage their distributed data: discover, select effectively, reduce the volume, and transfer. They can also configure data processing functionality, for which the C3-Grid offers a couple of basic and higher level services. User specific processing components can be flexibly assembled to form complex user specific workflows, triggered and monitored via a community portal. The users will only need a standard web browser as a local application on their PC to take full advantage of the C3-Grid infrastructure.
