SimMoLib – Simulation Model Library

Project description

Concurrent Engineering Facility in Bremen

In the DLR, simulation has been used to solve specific scientific problems in aviation and aerospace for many years. The necessary algorithms and models are developed individually for each project. However, they are not or only partially re-used for subsequent projects. The current situation in the aerospace institutes is that:

  • specific simulation models are available, but often (e.g. by the resignation of employees) no comprehensive overview exists, what models are available,
  • models are insufficiently documented, so their reuse and necessary adjustments for a new operation purpose can be judged severely,
  • technical validation of the models according to established procedures has not been performed; mostly validation results are not documented, thus it is no detailed information on the realism/accuracy and the sensitivity and stability of the models available,
  • models were developed for different simulation tools in different versions (e.g. Simulink), hence they can not or only with effort been executed in other tools.

On the other hand, the implemented knowledge in these models represent a considerable aerospace know-how, which makes the systematic reuse in current and future aerospace projects of DLR mandatory.

The project SimMoLib develops a library prototype for simulation models in the whole DLR. In this library models should be stored only, which are verified, validated, and documented extensively. In addition, the possibilities of user support shall be examined.

DLR Simulation and Software Technology Tasks

In addition to administration, the DLR department Simulation and Software Technology is responsible for the selection of software technologies for the library and for building the library. Also preliminary work in the field of metamodels and verification/validation of simulation models is task of DLR Simulation and Software Technology.
