On the sunny high plateau of Melchsee-Frutt in the swisse alps met in March 49 graduate students of the Department of Concentrating Solar technology from eight different European research institutes to the 11th SOLLAB doctoral colloquium. Subsequently ETH Zurich invited to the 6th SFERA Winter School.
The events are organized by the SFERA affiliates in exchange, this year by the ETH Zurich. The Head of the Department of renewable energy sources in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, Prof. Steinfeld, received the participants of the colloquium and Winter School cordially.
At 1920 meters above sea level presented the students in Melchsee-Frutt the current status of their scientific work. The topics covered were solar chemical process engineering, technologies for solar tower and parabolic trough power plants, water desalination and treatment as well as the cross-cutting issues measurement technology and materials research. Throughout the colloquium Prof. Steinfeld and the two directors of the DLR Institute of Solar Research, Prof. Pitz-Paal and Prof. Hoffschmidt were available for questions and discussions.
The attendees came from the DLR Institute of Solar Research, ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland, PROMES from France, PSA-CIEMAT and IMDEA from Spain as well as from ENEA in Italy. For the first time present was the University of Évora, Portugal.
The theme of this year's Winter School SFERA was "Thermal storage in solar concentrating technology applications". Guest speakers from European research institutions lectured on general thermal storage, system integration of salt storage systems in CSP power plants, on chemical and latent memory and the sustainable and holistic approach and the evaluation of thermal storage systems.
The annual Doctoral Colloquium and the SFERA Winter School is an initiative funded by the European Union research project SFERA (Solar Facilities for the European Research Area). The aim is to promote cooperation between Europe's leading research institutes in the field of CSP (Concentrating Solar Power). The Doctoral Colloquium and the Winter School offers young scientists a platform for knowledge and experience, technical discussions and the development of personal networks.
Host of the SOLLAB colloquium and the Summer School 2016 will be the Spanish research center CIEMAT. Date and venue will be published on the SFERA website and on the websites of the participating research institutes.
