Energy Research Network sets course for technology goals of the German federal government

The Energy Research Network has published 26 technology reports evaluating technologies for the energy transition. The reports identify the opportunities and risks of the technologies and assess Germany's potential market share and its potential for innovation in international comparison. They provide the basis for the Federal Government's 7th energy research program. The reports are divided into the following categories:

  • renewable energy
  • conventional power plants
  • infrastructure
  • sector coupling
  • energy and resource efficient buildings
  • energy and resource efficiency in industry

The network of representatives from science and industry includes the DLR Institute for Solar Research. As a research institution in the field of solar thermal power plant technologies, it evaluates their performance and their importance in achieving the climate protection goals of 2030 and 2050. An essential feature of solar thermal power plants is their ability to produce power around the clock using integrated heat storage devices. As a result, they can contribute significantly to securing the energy supply and to stabilizing the power grid.

The energy research program determines the direction of research projects in the coming years. Only through constant research and development can Germany meet the challenge of the energy transition and expand its role in the field of renewable technologies on the global market.

The network had presented the state of research and future research needs and submitted its recommendations to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in December.
