PreFlexMS

Development of the next generation molten salt power tower

The project PreFlexMS includes tasks within research and development in different disciplines, in order to increase the performance of solarthermal power towers by using liquid salt as heat transfer medium. The main objectives of the project, which receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, are:

  • Development and demonstration of a once-through evaporator with liquid salt for solar use in the test facility for liquid salt at the University of Evora (Portugal).
  • Development of a dispatch optimizer for optimizing the operation mode in electricity markets with daily differences in remuneration structures.
  • Development of methods for irradiation forecasts for the mentioned operational optimization with focus on improving the estimation of uncertainties in the forecast

Further details concerning the project can be found online at http://www.preflexms.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/PreFlexMS-802509186533617.

The project is coordinated by General Electric. As the biggest partner of the project, DLR works in the following fields:

The Institute of Solar Research

  • Coordination for the test setup of the steam generator demonstration in Evora together with the University of Evora
  • Development of a dispatch optimizer in order to take uncertainties in the irradiation forecasts into consideration

The German Remote Sensing Data Centre (DFD)

  • Coordination of the development of irradiation forecasts with focus on approximating uncertainties
