At a level half way up the solar tower, project partners from industry and academia (Kraftanlagen München GmbH, Stadtwerke Jülich GmbH, Solar Institute Jülich of FH Aachen, and the German Aerospace Center) have installed a research facility. This is where up to 1 MW of highly concentrated sunlight is available for experiments. The lab at the ‘Research Level‘ measures 80 m² in floor area, 3 m in height and has a 7 x 3 meter opening facing the heliostat field.
In previously conducted large-scale experiments, the focus was on the development of open volumetric receivers and methods for solar thermal production of hydrogen.
Occupying an entire level of the building, the research section has its own infrastructure complete with electric power, compressed air and water supply, ventilation and refrigeration systems as well as CCTV cameras. Since it needs to be flexible and capable to cater for a wide variety of research requirements, it is generously equipped with data acquisition and storage capacity as well as a large variety of measuring equipment and sensors.
