Solutions for Renewable Energy Forecasting
In the Smart4Res research project, researchers from 12 institutes, universities and companies are working on intelligent solutions for integrating renewable energies into the power grid. The aim of the project is to be able to predict the amount of electricity to be expected from fluctuating renewable energy sources more reliably. More precise forecasts make it possible to optimize network operation and participation in electricity markets. Such forecasts are becoming more and more important as the share of green energy in the general power supply will continue to rise in the coming years. A steady increase in the amount of data that is collected in every moment and computing capabilities, as well as recent advances in meteorological forecasting and data science, enable a more reliable forecast of the amount of renewable electricity that is available.

High-resolution forecasting approaches
Smart4RES concentrates on new developments towards very high-resolution and dedicated measuring methods and evaluation software for weather forecasting. It uses different and geographically distributed data sources, for example numerical weather forecasts, remote sensing from cloud cameras, satellites and the like, performance and meteorological measurements as well as high-resolution weather forecasts. The data from these sources make it possible to obtain high quality and continuous predictions about the availability of renewable energy sources.
Data markets & collaborative forecasting
Because different meteostations, companies and private individuals collect the required data, it is currently not possible to use all data together. Smart4Res is working to overcome this difficulty and is developing new methods to achieve the best possible forecast accuracy. Smart4RES uses learning and prediction methods that protect the privacy of those involved in the data exchange.
Decision-aid strategies to optimize renewable value in energy systems
Smart4Res attaches great importance to the efficient use of the data obtained for forecasting. Thanks to advanced decision-making and optimization approaches, energy from renewable sources can be used in the best possible way. The focus is on the development of models for applications in the commercial area, involving storage, market participation and the provision of ancillary services.
