The DLR Institute of Lightweight Systems is among the world’s leading scientific research institutions in the field of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics and adaptive systems.
The Institute fulfils a bridge function between fundamental academic research and industrial applications. Six departments within the Institute provide the scientific basis. In addition to its fundamental work into prospective research, the Institute also focuses on six key areas of applied research. These areas are used to execute large practice oriented projects with an interdepartmental and interdisciplinary nature.
Seeking to promote fundamental research within higher education, the Institute maintains a strategic partnership and cooperation with the TU Braunschweig, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and other academic institutions. Moreover, the Institute has created the Center for Lightweight-Production-Technology (ZLP) and the Technology Transfer Centers in Hamburg and Bremen to maintain close ties with clients from industry within its application-based research.
