Wing

The business area "Wing" at the Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems includes a broad range of research topics for wing structures. It combines the key competences of the different departments within the institute with the aim to develop integrated design solutions and innovative concepts for future wings. Such innovations are intended to generate a net benefit in terms of cost, economic footprint or weight. Current research topics include virtual product development of the wing including validation strategy and the development and optimisation of classical wing components and moveables such as leading and trailing edge devices. New methods for the automated manufacture of fibre-reinforced wing components as well as "Multi-Functional Moveables" which, for example, allow for both flight control and gust load alleviation are being investigated. Another key research focus of this business area is the design and manufacture of structures that allow for more airflow laminarity and reduced fuel burn, either through natural laminar flow (NLF) or via hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC). This business area encompasses a large number of research projects on both the national and international scale.
