How are transport and the environment connected? Which actions have which impacts? And how can we measure this? DLR scientists are pursuing these questions in the project “Transport and the Environment II” and simulating complex future scenarios to find the answers. In the forerunner project, tools were developed for describing trends in transportation of people and goods in Germany and Europe - concerning air transport even worldwide - through to the year 2050. Furthermore, methods and algorithms for calculating environmental impacts have been in the focus of research.
The Institute of Transportation Systems looks amongst other things at the simulation-based distribution of road traffic (redistribution) over the available road network. The focus here is on urban traffic in particular. In conjunction with the Institute of Transport Research, existing models for traffic demand (TAPAS project, Travel and Activity Patterns Simulation) and traffic redistribution (SUMO project, Simulation of Urban MObility) are coupled together via a fully automated interface in order to permit the necessary iterative processes to run efficiently with no manual intervention.
Using this integrated model, the transport and environmental impacts of selected traffic and transport management measures are simulated and quantified for urban transportation. An emissions module integrated into SUMO deals with the evaluation of air pollutants and CO2 emissions. The impact of the measures on the development of noise generation is looked at with the help of a noise source and distribution model from the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology which is connected to SUMO via an additional interface.
The research project "Transport and the Environment II" brings together DLR scientists and engineers with partners from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht to build on the work of the first phase of the project.
