Transport System

We consider the technical and operational aspects of the transport system as a whole and investigate their interactions – including the people who use and operate the system.

The transport system comprises a large number of modes of transport, players and technologies. At the Institute of Transportation Systems, we consider the technical and operational aspects in their entirety and research their interactions  – including with the people who use and operate the system. How can we reliably link automated bus transport at the railway station with automated rail transport? How can we ensure that cyclists and automated vehicles interact safely and progress without disruption? How can we support people in finding an optimal route and what does a robust operation that gets them safely to their destination look like? These are just some of the questions to which our researchers are developing answers.

In its technology-oriented and human-centred research into the transport system, the Institute of Transportation Systems takes into account the requirements of both users and operators. We support the planning and operation of intermodal systems by developing innovative concepts and approaches for needs-based and user-centred technological solutions, human-technology interfaces and by analysing the necessary information flows. We also provide the basis for their technical and operational validation and verification.

Transport simulation is an important tool for analysing requirements, developing and evaluating transport technologies. Our researchers use the open source programme SUMO, developed by the institute, which enables the detailed and microscopic simulation of technology and implementation scenarios. The simulation environment is constantly being methodically expanded for this purpose, coupled with traffic engineering functions and integrated into real-world data spaces.

A central objective in road and rail transport is to ensure a high quality of traffic flow or operational procedures, which is reflected not least in low and robust journey times for all road users. The Institute works closely with transport companies, infrastructure operators and local authorities to achieve this. Our work also supports the collection of traffic and infrastructure data. In Braunschweig, we integrate the institute's own infrastructure into our research with the Test Bed Lower Saxony. In rail transport, we analyse the capacities in the network and adapt intermodal operating concepts accordingly.

Our research is human-centred and target group-oriented. We align it with the needs of people, who we involve in many projects from the early development and research phases. In studies, workshops and surveys, we develop concepts together, test our ideas and give all interest groups a voice.

At intermodal hubs, such as airports, train stations or stops, the focus is on digitalisation and climate neutrality. To this end, our scientists are researching and optimising technical systems and processes to link all modes of transport. Our aim is to increase the safety, predictability and efficiency of processes for the mobility of passengers and the transport of goods.
