01. November 2023: Documentary film on the subject of lime heating
DLR and the German Climate Foundation are cooperating on a video and documentary film. In the video, Viktor Kühl presents employees of the German Aerospace Centre, in particular the seasonal storage of renewable energy in lime (lime heating). In addition to the educational videos, the project also produced a documentary film. This film and the video series are part of a set of methods for teachers on innovative climate protection solutions. The interactive methods, flow charts and copy templates can be

26 Oktober 2023: Innovative filler successfully deployed in one-tank molten salt energy storage system
An important milestone was reached in the NEWCLINE project
.
On 26 October 2023, a novel single-tank storage concept that stores hot and cold liquid salt together with a filler in one tank was filled.
The newly developed filler and inventory solutions are based on structured ceramic fillers and latent heat storage materials to stabilise the outlet temperature of the storage tank.
Advantages: reduced space requirements and significant cost savings.
Focal areas: Energy, Salt Storage, High Temperature, Solar Thermal Power Plants, Renewable Energies.

15 September 2023: IZABW Conference in Ulm: Zinc-air batteries as an alternative to lithium-ion technology
ZSW and DLR organise workshop with more than 100 international experts on 18 and 19 September in the Stadthaus
The International Workshop on Zinc-Air-Based Batteries (IZABW) is a conference focused on the research and development of zinc-based batteries that could serve as an alternative to lithium batteries. The event attracts researchers, experts, and industry representatives from around the world, providing a platform for knowledge exchange in this field. This year's 3rd IZABW conference, scheduled for September 18th and 19th, 2023, is organized by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) in Ulm and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the Stadthaus in Ulm's Münsterplatz. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding this event.

07 September 2023: World’s First Piloted Flight of Liquid Hydrogen Powered Electric Aircraft Completed
The hydrogen-electric ‘HY4’ demonstrator aircraft took off from Maribor, Slovenia, and saw safe and efficient operation throughout multiple flight tests
The aircraft uses liquid hydrogen to power a hydrogen-electric fuel cell system that powered the aircraft for the entire flight
The flight lays the foundation for long-range, emissions-free flight, with liquid hydrogen doubling the range of the HY4 aircraft to 1,500km, compared to using gaseous hydrogen

8 August, 2023: Memorandum of Understanding German-American Cooperation for Battery Technology of the Future
On 3 August 2023, memorandums of understanding were signed in Frankfurt by both sides to continue the successful German-American cooperation. Lithium metal batteries enable energy densities far higher than can be achieved with current lithium ion technology. A key issue for the development of the technology, especially with solid-state electrolytes, is a better understanding of the processes at the interfaces of the different materials. DLR, led by Prof. Arnulf Latz, is coordinating studies of interfaces between metallic lithium and liquid electrolytes (Lillint2) and is participating in the project to study the interface between cathode materials and solid-state electrolytes (CatSE2). Details for possible solutions for liquid electrolytes in the related link.
