The EC Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Directive 2009/28/EC) sets mandatory national targets for the overall share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption. Each Member State shall adopt a national renewable energy action plan, which sets out the respective national targets for the share of renewable energies consumed in transport, electricity and heating and cooling in 2020. A report on progress in the promotion and use of energy from renewable sources has to be submitted to the Commission in 2011, and every two years thereafter.
The project supports the German Federal Ministry for the Environment in drafting the national action plan and the first progress report, and in providing additional scientific background information related to issues addressed in the national action plan.
