Development of a modular, intelligent and networked power, communication and sensor interface unit for integration in light posts for construction site and smart city applications.

The aim of this research project is the development of "smart light posts", for example by upgrading existing street lamps, which will establish an open hardware and software platform for smart city services in public spaces.

Duration:
January 2017 until March 2019

Funded by:
Federal Ministry for Economic A€ffairs and Energy (BMWi), The Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM)

Project Participants:
Quantumfrog GmbH
Institute of Networked Energy Systems

Project Manager at the Institute of Networked Energy Systems:
Dr. Peter Klement

Project Description:
The aim of this research project is to develop "smart light posts" as key components in an open hardware and software platform for smart city services both across the board as well as selectively for special outdoor applications. The DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems is focusing here on network simulation, forecasting energy consumption, energy management and implementing sensor references, as well as on testing and demonstration activities.

The required power, communication and control hardware can be integrated into existing (luminaire) masts. Interfaces are being defined and made accessible to third parties for the integration of additional sensors and actuators. Sensors from the portfolios of project partners will be integrated. The external switch release for power connections also allows electricity to be used by third parties, e.g. for the purposes of charging electric vehicles and construction machinery.

By developing an energy management system that is combined with an energy consumption forecast it will be possible to prevent the existing electricity infrastructure from overloading. The connected components are linked to other control systems via a software platform with defined open data interfaces. This also take care of the control, inventory and administration of the "smart light posts". Mobile and stationary user interfaces are being developed to operate and maintain the infrastructure.
