Project Description:
As part of the energy transition, the mobility sector, just like the electricity and heat sectors, must be made more sustainable – and this means not only private cars. The ELogZ (energy-efficient logistics centre) research project is focusing on the logistics industry and looking at analysing, developing and simulating an electricity-based energy supply concept for a logistics site, specifically the electrification of temperature-controlled transport.

Within the growing logistics industry, the percentage of shipments made under temperature-controlled conditions, such as for food, medicines or chemical products, is on the rise. Most of the refrigeration units required run on fossil fuels, emitting large quantities of CO2. The project is therefore geared towards developing a low-emission, sector-integrated energy supply concept that is specifically designed for logistics sites with a focus on electrified refrigeration logistics. These solutions will allow the sectors of electricity, heating/refrigeration and mobility to be combined in a single logistics centre. The resulting energy-efficient optimisation measures will help to minimise the amount of fossil fuels used and establish flexible, resilient systems. The research findings will be demonstrated as part of the ELogZ project at PANEUROPA Transport GmbH’s site in Bakum, Lower Saxony.

The researchers at the Institute of Networked Energy Systems are mainly working on analysing, developing and simulating the energy-efficient energy supply concept. On the one hand, they are focusing on analysing the initial situation and devising a simulation model for optimising the system as a whole as well as developing a measurement concept to allow project results to be verified. On the other hand, they are working to develop and simulate an integrated supply concept based on renewable energy, which will be used to study the potential for flexibility offered by refrigerated trailers and the possible energy savings in consideration of logistics data.
