Energy Systems Analysis at the Stuttgart site develops and applies methods and tools that have been specifically designed to address the issues and research questions intrinsic to systems analysis and technology assessment in the field of energy supply. Knowledge is also made available that can be used by decision-makers from science, industry and politics as guidance for developing long-term research priorities and in formulating the framework conditions for energy, environmental and research policy.
The work combines top-down energy industry analyses of the overall energy system at the regional, national and European levels with technology-oriented bottom-up studies in relevant sub-areas, such as life cycle assessments, as well as analyses of potential and cost-effectiveness. This area of operation is complemented by conceptual work on sustainability issues, technical learning and market launches of new technologies.
