Research Project Multi-criteria analysis for building and assessing sustainable scenario pathways

Multi-criteria analysis for building and assessing sustainable scenario pathways

Project Participants:
Helmholtz Research School on Energy Scenarios

Project Description:
In the frame of the Helmholtz Research School on Energy Scenarios (https://www.energyscenarios.kit.edu/) DLR conducts a new PhD project financed by a Helmholtz scholarship. The International Research School on Energy Scenarios is a common institution of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) together with partners from the University of Stuttgart, ISI Fraunhofer Institute and German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The research school provides an internationally unique opportunity to become an outstanding researcher in energy scenario analysis. It provides high quality training for doctoral researchers in a structured, three year's program.

“Multi-criteria analysis for building and assessing sustainable scenario pathways“

Many state of the art energy scenarios concentrate on greenhouse gas mitigation, energy efficiency, high renewable energy shares and cost optimization, but often simplify or even neglect many other important and socially relevant properties and impact factors of energy technologies such as material consumption, land transformation, public acceptance, health impacts, external costs, and others. Comprehensive assessment of life cycle impacts and external costs of energy technologies and products has taken place in the past two decades for the integrated assessment of scenario pathways on national, European and global level. However, these methodologies are not yet implemented sufficiently in many contemporary normative and exploratory scenario models. On this background the focus of the thesis is on evaluating existing approaches of multi-criteria analysis, defining relevant indicators and target functions, building and applying a dynamical approach for ex-post analysis of energy scenarios and exploring the implementation into an energy system optimization model.
