Within the framework of the research initiative "Energiewende im
Verkehr", the scientific accompanying research project "BEniVer" comprehensively investigates the development of renewable fuels with the aim of networking the 14 technical research projects of the initiative with more than 100 participating research groups and industrial partners, to leverage synergy potentials and to make the project results comparable. The project focuses on interdisciplinary analyses of technical, ecological, economic and social effects.
The research project "BEniVer" has set itself the goal of accompanying the forward-looking technical research projects in the funding initiative "Energy Transition in Transport" in a results-oriented, methodical, transparent and objective manner. The tasks of the accompanying research include the organization of annual status conferences and interdisciplinary workshops, at which the project participants can benefit from synergies in terms of content, the provision of relevant information and opportunities for knowledge-promoting exchange.
In close cooperation with the technical collaborative projects, the accompanying research has also developed a comprehensive data concept to ensure comparability within the research initiative.

Furthermore, social dimensions and effects of the introduction of electricity-based fuels will be addressed with analyses on acceptance and market introduction mechanisms.
Within the project, the DLR Institute of Transport Research will investigate the use and acceptance of renewable fuels in the transport system. The focus of the investigation is on ground-based transport, passenger and freight transport and the fuels from the accompanying joint projects. In this way, the Institute of Transport Research contributes to the market potential assessment of renewable fuels.
In order to estimate the benefits of regenerative fuels in the transport system, the institute's large-scale facility "Moving Lab" will be used. The "Moving Lab" represents a new form of GPS- and smartphone-based mobility data collection, which will be used to study the refueling behavior of the vehicle fleet registered in Germany. This will allow important conclusions to be drawn about how new fuels need to be introduced across the country. In addition, the temporal and spatial demand for fuels for different segments of traffic will be quantified.
Furthermore, the Institute of Transport Research will conduct a Stated Preference survey on the acceptance of renewable fuels. In this way, characteristics of the fuels from the user's point of view will be identified and it will be determined how their attractiveness can be increased. To complement this, international experience will be used for comparison.
The data and results of the research projects will be combined in an overall assessment and serve as the basis for a comprehensive system analysis and technology evaluation. The renewable fuels and their production processes investigated in the funding initiative will be analyzed with regard to various evaluation criteria, such as costs, environmental impact and development potential.
The result is a guide with options for action for the research, development, production, use and market launch of alternative fuels. This guide is intended to provide a sound information basis for social decisions on the further development of sustainable mobility.
