New Paths: Paths to sustainable mobility in Lower Saxony

The energy transition within the transportation sector has gained increasing importance within Germany in recent years and is an important element in achieving climate goals. The main focus for transportation is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants. Similarly, in Lower Saxony the energy transition in the transportation sector is of increasing importance.

Project

It is in this environment that the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection has launched the project "Paths to Sustainable Mobility in Lower Saxony." The aim of this project is to obtain a comprehensive overview of the transportation situation in Lower Saxony, to develop recommendations for sustainable mobility, and to identify their implementation opportunities and obstacles.

Objectives

In Lower Saxony, many sustainability projects have been funded in recent years. Although new mobility concepts and technologies have been developed and supported, there are clear implementation challenges. Against this background, a comprehensive cross-sectoral analysis of the current state of sustainable mobility will be carried out for Lower Saxony and the opportunities and obstacles in the implementation of new mobility concepts will be identified.

The main goals of the project are as follows:

• Analysis of regional conditions (existing spatial and economic structures, political and social institutions, available transport, and existing mobility patterns), followed by the development of measures to improve sustainable mobility
• Elaboration of an overview of existing projects in the transport sector
• Develop measures to increase the share of renewable energy and reduce emissions.

Approach

The research project consists of the following four work packages in addition to the project coordination:

1. Analysis of the status quo of the energy transition in the transportation sector
2. Actor and institution analysis
3. In-depth analysis of selected sustainable mobility projects in Lower Saxony
4. Expert report "Paths to sustainable mobility in Lower Saxony" and final event
