The handbook "Transport in Figures” (Ger. Verkehr in Zahlen, ViZ) presents the state of the transport system and its development in Germany and in the European Union. The annually published compendium has been a comprehensive reference on transport statistics in Germany for fifty years.
As a central source of information, it provides key figures on almost all aspects of transport and its development, including its importance for the national economy. The wide range of data and numerous long-term time series facilitate the monitoring of the transport sector's evolution, the observation of structural changes and the identification of interrelationships.
The database includes data on infrastructure investment and fixed assets for the entire transport sector, transport sector-specific economic indicators on infrastructure, vehicle fleets, employees and revenue as well as information on vehicle fleets, driving licenses and road accidents. For passenger and freight transport, figures on transport volume and performance are provided, complemented by differentiating information on, for example, transport purposes, the transport of dangerous goods or international transport. A separate section is devoted to the costs of transport, including information on energy consumption and the resulting environmental impacts. Selected international key figures allow for comparisons with other European countries and complete the comprehensive publication.
With the 49th edition in 2020/2021, the manual was for the first time compiled under the leadership of DLR, but still in close cooperation with the German Institute for Economic Research (Ger. Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung, DIW), which was particularly responsible for the capital stock model and macroeconomic analyses. During the preceding project phase (2015 to 2019), DLR was already involved in the further development of the models for calculating passenger transport demand and vehicle kilometers traveled.
Project activities and approach
The numerous tables are updated using various data sources. Statistics provided by government departments, associations, companies, research projects and transport surveys, such as the “Mileage Survey” (Ger. Fahrleistungserhebung) and the national household travel survey ”Mobility in Germany (MiD)” (Ger. Mobilität in Deutschland), are evaluated and consolidated. For the annual update and extrapolation of vehicle mileage and fuel consumption as well as passenger transport demand, extensive model calculations are implemented. These model calculations incorporate key figures from official statistics on, among other things, the development of the population, car ownership and fuel consumption.
