Innovation policy in the transport sector
Background of research and general conditions
The backbone of today's mobility is "the car" and "the truck". Lifestyles, production concepts and consumption patterns, for example, have adapted to the performance of the means of transport. However, if we look back in time, for example 150 years, the railways had a similar significance for social and economic interaction as the car has today. Although the automobile has replaced the railway in importance, it still serves a significant market of about 20% of transport performance. Other examples of change processes have resulted in the "old" means of transport being downright pushed back into market niches, such as transatlantic passenger shipping into the niche of cruise shipping, horse-drawn carriages into equestrian sports or even narrow-gauge steam trains in trips for tourist purposes. There are also examples where the process of enforcing new means of transport has led to the old means of transport being squeezed out of the market, such as the horse tram after the introduction of the electric tram or the zeppelin with the enforcement of aircraft. Furthermore, there may also be processes of re-launch after a replacement, of new growth out of the niche, such as can currently be observed with the bicycle or the zeppelin.
The aim of the topic/thesis is to investigate one of these change paths with the analysis of the details of the transition phase using historical case studies. The individual analyses can help to formulate the "behaviour pattern of the transition phase" (infrastructure conditions, state intervention, transport market peculiarities etc.). The task can be assigned several times due to the numerous historical transition processes to be examined.
The results of the work contribute to the formulation of innovation policy recommendations for action. For example, this would be relevant in railway policy, the discourse on public transport or the transition to electromobility.
