Furnace Facilities for Composites Manufacturing

The Institute of Structures and Design (BT) at its sites in Stuttgart and Augsburg operates four furnaces for the investigation of fibre-reinforced structural component production processes.

The technical specifications of the furnaces in detail are:

Augsburg

Furnace 1:

  • interior dimensions: 5 m x 4.5 m x 8.5 m
  • max. temperature: 230°C
  • temperature uniformity: ±5°C

Furnace 2:

  • interior dimensions: 3 m x 3 m x 5 m
  • max. temperature: 410°C
  • temperature uniformity: ±5°C

Furnace 3:

  • interior dimensions: 1.5 m x 1 m x 1 m
  • max. temperature: 450°C
  • furnace class 1 with type A instrumentation
  • AMS 2750E

Stuttgart

Furnace 4:

  • interior dimensions: 2 m x 1.2 m x 1.2 m
  • max. temperature: 450°C
  • temperature uniformity: ±5°C

The scope of performance of the furnaces thus ranges from small laboratory furnaces for preliminary tests to large facilities for the production of full-scale demonstrators. For example, pressure bulkheads (4.5 m diameter) and boosters (up to 6 m in length) have already been manufactured with partners from the aerospace industry.

Research focuses on the investigation of production processes for the infusion of dry fibre preforms by means of vacuum infiltration with thermosetting resins (using the VAP and VARI processes), as well as the vacuum consolidation of high-performance thermoplastics.
