The Marine Remote Sensing is examined by two teams: Optical Methodologies (Berlin) and SAR Oceanography (Oberpfaffenhofen). These teams are engaged in the development, implementation and validation of models and algorithms for analyzing data from satellite-borne optical and radar sensors for marine and maritime applications.
The goal of this scientific work is to provide methodologies and processor prototypes for deriving biological, ecological and meteo-marine parameters from satellite data:
Various high spectral resolution and hyperspectral optical sensors, and synthetic aperture radars on national and international earth observation satellites are used as data sources. Attention currently centers on using ENVISAT (ESA) and TerraSAR-X (Germany) data, and making preparations connected with the new TanDEM-X and EnMAP missions.
Bio-optical and radiation transport models for the optical spectral range, SAR imaging models, and image processing techniques are employed in algorithm development. In order to calibrate satellite and aerial sensors and validate models and algorithms, special measurement campaigns are carried out using in-house measurement technology (including atmosphere and submersible spectrometers and ground-based radar) in cooperation with external partners. The in-orbit calibration of the hyperspectral sensor for the EnMAP mission (scheduled for 2013), will be handled by the department.
The work focuses primarily on finding new fields of application for remote sensing data and on pre-operational development efforts connected with the European GMES program (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security). In collaboration with DFD, these developments are being incorporated in operational near-real-time production chains. Toward this end the department is involved in a number of national and international GMES projects. The scientific and methodological results also contribute to the development of customized concepts for new earth observation instruments and missions.
Its science activities, research work and applications projects have integrated the Marine Remote Sensing teams into a network of numerous partners including both research institutions and end-user groups.
