STAB - Deutsche Strömungsmechanische Arbeitsgemeinschaft

The working group „Strömungen mit Ablösung“ (STAB) was founded in 1979 on the initiative of German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics Lilenthal-Oberth e. V. - by flow researchers, aerodynamicists and aeronautical engineers from DLR, universities and industry.

It arose from the "joint endeavour to promote flow research in Germany in general and to deepen it by cencentrating on a sub-area with a promising economic and forward-looking research policy future"(Extract from the preamble to the STAB Rules of Procedure).

The foundation was based on the idea of organising research associations from industry, universities and large-scale research on a highly topical specialist subject, which at the time was identified as "currents with detachments".

In the years that followed, further fluid mechanics issues were addressed, making STAB a well-known name among experts. Not only the classical topics of fluid mechanics are addressed, but also problems from automotive engineering, building aerodynamics, process engineering, engine construction, etc. are discussed.

STAB brings together all important fields of fluid mechanics - especially aerospace - from basic research, large-scale research and industry in Germany and is organised in the following alphabetically ordered specialist groups:

  • Aerodynamics of ground vehicles
  • Aeroelastik und Strukturdynamik
  • Aeroelasticity and structural dynamics
  • Bio- and microfluid mechanics
  • Rotorcraft
  • Experimental aerodynamics
  • Highly agile configurations
  • Hypersonic aerothermodynamics
  • Multidisciplinary optimisation
  • Numerical aerodynamics
  • Flow acoustics
  • Flow control
  • Transport aircraft configurations
  • Turbulence and transition
  • Test facilities
  • Wind energy

A specialist symposium and a workshop on these topics are held alternately each year. The workshop is organised at the DLR site in Göttingen and the symposium at different locations in Germany.

Information on the respective event will be published here in good time.
