Motivation

Green hydrogen is an emission-free alternative to petroleum and of increasing strategic importance for Germany's energy and climate policy. In this context, both production and use are in the focus of various research and development initiatives. With regard to the maritime sector, the main focus is on the production of green hydrogen from offshore wind energy, the development and operation of hydrogen powered ship types optimized for the respective use, hydrogen transport via pipelines, and the development of port infrastructures for the reception and further processing of offshore-produced hydrogen.


Goals and Methodology

A principal goal of this project is to relate cross-system resilience-oriented aspects to system’s requirements and restrictions in the context of green hydrogen offshore infrastructures and maritime utilization. Here, especially the design requirement aspects are of importance, because at present their underlying safety factors are not known and goal-based formulations to “ensure sufficient safety” are not meaningful if no prior design are known to avoid excessive expenditure to remain on the safe side. Hence, the findings from an overall resilience assessment will be propagated back to the individual component level safety requirement to ensure overall compliance of the structure in question.

Innovation and Perspectives

As a consequence, this will result in a novel design methodology to assess resilient systems and components, where safety factors do not have to be assigned a priori, but results from the assessment for the desired safety target.  The results of an overall resilience assessment will be related to the safety requirements of the individual components to ensure the overall compliance of the system in question.
