Departments

At the Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures, we work in numerous fields of research, which are divided into four departments. Together, we develop concepts, processes and technologies that strengthen and improve the resilience of critical organizations and facilities.

Resilience and Risk Methodology

In the Resilience and Risk Methodology Department, we develop models and methods to strengthen the resilience of infrastructures against serious disruptions and to ensure their functioning. At the same time, we develop concepts to improve the security of critical facilities, for example to protect them from attack.

Detection Systems

In four interdisciplinary groups, we develop, evaluate and utilise innovative sensors and systems to protect critical infrastructures from hazards such as operational accidents, vandalism, terrorist attacks and extreme weather events. In our work, we always focus on technological innovation, close collaboration and practical application to minimise the risks for strategically important facilities.

Digital Twins for Infrastructures

We use the concept of the Digital Twin as a tool to improve the resilience of critical infrastructures. A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a physical object, process or system. The Digital Twin is updated in real time with data collected by sensors and other sensing devices in the physical counterpart. This data enables accurate replication and monitoring of the real object or process.

Simulation Methods for Digital Twins

Established in 2022, our newest department Simulation Methods for Digital Twins concentrates on the seamless integration of cutting-edge numerical methods and simulation techniques into digital twins designed for critical infrastructures.
