Thermal management plays a particularly important role with regard to the electrification of aircraft engines. A relatively large amount of heat must be dissipated at a low temperature difference and the usual systems for pressurisation and air conditioning must also be electrified.

For this reason, a large European research consortium has been formed with well-known system manufacturers to develop new technologies for this challenge.

DLR is playing a central role in this consortium to develop a digital twin for the overall thermal system. Modern object-oriented modelling and simulation techniques such as Modelica and FMI are used for this purpose. In particular, the new DLR Thermofluid Stream Library forms the basis for modelling

On the basis of the digital twin, new technologies can then be evaluated with regard to their climate impact and hardware tests can be supplemented by additional virtual scenarios.
