Hydrogen as a key elementent

Providing sustainable energy is one of the greatest challenges facing our society worldwide. Forward-looking and efficient technologies play an important role in this. The key element here is hydrogen produced in a climate-neutral way – it stands for sustainability and innovation, for a wide range of possible uses and sector coupling.

A Roland Berger study has identified the need for testing facilities for hydrogen technologies, which must be made available to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular.

The DLR Institute of Space Propulsion has unique experience in the use of hydrogen in large quantities. The energy carrier has been an integral part of space flight for several decades and is used at the Lampoldshausen site for testing space propulsion systems. Every year, the site requires up to 300 tons of liquid hydrogen (equivalent to over four million liters of liquid hydrogen) and over 20 tons of gaseous hydrogen. In order to make this know-how and the existing infrastructure usable in other sectors and thus support the development of large-scale hydrogen applications towards high levels of technological maturity, transfer projects have been launched from space flight to the areas of mobility and energy using green hydrogen. The DLR Institute is therefore working on mapping and further developing the entire process from regeneratively produced hydrogen through storage and liquefaction to application.

Expansion of the test infrastructure through transfer projects

DLR is strengthening its role as a technology and development partner in Lampoldshausen with the establishment of an additional hydrogen test infrastructure in the Zero Emission – Hydrogen Site Lampoldshausen and HYDROGENIUM projects. Hydrogen-based systems and components such as compressors, tanks or micro gas turbines can be tested and further developed at several test positions. Thanks to its modular design, the test infrastructure can be flexibly adapted – depending on the order and research project.
