The Nördlinger Ries impact crater
The Nördlinger Ries impact crater
Around 15 million years ago, an asteroid with a diameter of approximately 26 kilometres struck southern Germany. The Nördlinger Ries impact crater is still visible from space today, with its rim indicated by the dark green, curved forested areas. The image was captured by satellites from the Sentinel-2 Earth observation mission, part of the European Copernicus programme.
