About Jan Marius Bach

Jan Marius Bach has always been interested in technology and science. However, he only gained professional access to aerospace during his studies of aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart, specialising in aircraft construction and space propulsion.

His first visit to the Col-CC in Oberpfaffenhofen was an excursion in aircraft construction. Impressed by this exciting task, he successfully applied for a job as Columbus Operations Controller (Col-OC) after completing his studies. "I would never have thought that as a university graduate I would be sitting in the control room and controlling the Columbus module so quickly!" said Marius after completing his training and passing his certification in autumn 2013.

Marius is no stranger to operations and shift work: he already worked as a ramp agent at Stuttgart Airport during his studies. "However, I only realised that coordinating the entire handling of flights under time pressure, from loading and catering to refuelling, is very similar to working in the control centre during my training as a Col-OC. This experience helps me every day when decisions have to be made quickly and correctly, because the astronauts' working time is also valuable and limited."

After two years of successful work in the Col-OC and EPIC team, with the main responsibility for preparing ISS Increments 45 and 46, he was appointed Columbus Flight Director in mid-2015.
