The MOSAiC - Virtual Research Environment

MOSAIC-VRE

The Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) was the largest Arctic research expedition to this date. Together with the Alfred Wegner Institut (AWI) as well as the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) we aim to provide novel methods and software tools for online data analysis, data exploration, data visualization, and data quality control inside a unified virtual research environment (VRE). The MOSAiC-VRE (M-VRE) enables scientists to exploit large, complex, and heterogeneous datasets to answer fundamental research questions of the MOSAiC expedition from within their browsers, lowering the barrier of entry to work with data gathered during the MOSAiC expedition.

We contribute to the M-VRE project in terms of data management, specifically data management of dense n-dimensional array data/data cubes (e.g. climate model data, satellite images). The service will be/(is) available inside Python notebooks that are accessible through an AWI hosted Jupyter Hub. All services inside the M-VRE will be publicly available for free.
