TerraSAR-X LogoObjective and description
With its radar antenna, the TerraSAR-X satellite acquires high-quality X-band radar images of the entire planet whilst circling Earth in a polar orbit at 514 km altitude. TerraSAR-X is designed to carry out its task for five years, independent of weather conditions and illumination, and reliably provides radar images with a resolution of up to 1m. The satellite was launched successfully on June 15th, 2007. For the commercial marketing of the resulting image products, the company InfoTerra was created as a Public Private Partnership between DLR and EADS Astrium GmbH.
The TerraSAR-X Project comprised the development of the TerraSAR-X satellite, the development of the ground segment and the commercial marketing of the resulting image products.
Receiving, distributed storage, conversion of data into image products, archiving and order handling take place in the Payload Ground Segment. To enable this, the DIMS production data system of the Applied Remote Sensing Cluster had to be developed further in accordance with the requirements on the TerraSAR-X satellite interface to the GSOC Mission Operation System and to the InfoTerra company.
Task of DLR Simulation and Software Technology
Within the German national project "TerraSAR-X Payload Ground Segment" the task of DLR Simulation and Software Technology was the quality management in phases B through E. To this end, DLR Simulation and Software Technology created and implemented a project quality system for the entire project based on the European space standard ECSS.
In phase B, the quality management contributed to the development of the Ground Segment Baseline Document with documentation and specification processes and standards. With the "Configuration and Documentation Management Plan" an additional quality and project management infrastructure was established. For phase C/D DLR Simulation and Software Technology prepared the quality management activities and the QM plan, and integrated the corresponding processes and standards into the project.
