The Trauen site of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is located in the Lüneburg Heath, in the immediate vicinity of the Bundeswehr airbase in Faßberg. Since 1935, the favourable location away from settlements and yet close to conurbations has been used to carry out highly demanding research experiments. The work and experiments of Prof. Eugen Sänger who played a leading role in setting up the site in Trauen and developing missile propulsion systems attracted particular scientific attention. One of his fundamental works is still used in almost all rocket engines today: the cooling of the bell nozzle with the rocket fuel.

The Airbase Fassberg allows the runways to be used if required.
