Joining of wood-based material systems

Joining technology

Lightweight construction is one of the game-changer technologies that focuses on increasing growth and competitiveness as well as ensuring climate protection and sustainability.

In order to make a significant contribution to achieving sustainability and climate targets, new lightweight materials are increasingly being used in vehicle development. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resource and energy efficiency.

Joining technology plays a key role in realising modern vehicle concepts with increasing complexity in the system and increased demand for agility in development.

For the construction of load-bearing lightweight systems, a structural and durable connection between the materials used and between the component and the body is a prerequisite in order to be able to safely transfer the forces that occur. The development of suitable joining technologies poses a particular challenge for the integration of new, sustainable material solutions into existing vehicle structures.

As a partner to SMEs, large companies and funding organisations, we provide process-, material-specific and constructive research results in joining technology for economic development, production and application, particularly for resource-efficient lightweight structures.

The qualification and validation of innovative joining technologies is carried out at the institute's own testing facilities with the latest measurement technology and on modern test systems for mechanical joining.
