Visit by the Director of the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre
On 28th and 29th August 2023, the Director of the EUROCONTROL Maastricht Upper Area Control Center (MUAC), John Santurbano, visited the Institute of Flight Guidance with a delegation for cooperation talks.
MUAC is a highly specialised facility of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL). As one of the largest and most modern control centres of its kind, MUAC monitors the upper airspace over a large part of Europe, i.e. over Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and north-west Germany - one of the busiest and most complex airspace areas in Europe. The air traffic controllers at MUAC coordinate thousands of flights every day and are crucial for the safety and smooth flow of air traffic in Europe.
During a presentation of the institute by Prof. Dirk Kügler and a tour of the simulation facilities, the employees of the control centre gained an impression of the institute's competences and research work in the field of innovative pilot-support systems. Both institutions agreed on a far-reaching cooperation in the areas of green aviation, flexible controller deployment, high automation in air traffic control, and artificial intelligence, among others.
