DLR-Certificate Cockpit

Are you interested in training at a flight school? You are already at flight school and want to take off for the cockpit soon? You are already a pilot and want to apply to an airline? Then register for our DLR test with certificate.

What is the DLR certificate? The DLR certificate is a certificate issued by DLR that you can use to prove that you have taken part in an examination covering the psychological requirements of the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA for cockpit crews in your application (to airlines or flight schools). These EASA regulations have been binding since February 2021, and all flight operations above a certain size must comply with the requirements when recruiting cockpit personnel. They stipulate that pilots must be examined with regard to their mental abilities and psychological characteristics before they are hired.

Which achievements are certified by the certificate? The certificate presents your test performance from the DLR certificate examination in comprehensible language. It is divided into the following sections:

  • Mental Performance ("Basic Cognitive Abilities"),
  • Operational and Professional Competencies,
  • Personality Traits,
  • Social Competencies.

Flexibility: The DLR certificate gives you a high degree of flexibility: Plan your examination when it suits you well, and not when an airline is hiring or you are in the exam stress of your training.

Benefit: For many airlines and flight schools, it has proven successful to commission DLR to select their cockpit personnel or the next generation of cockpit personnel in recent decades. With the DLR certificate, you have a comprehensive assessment in your hand, the passing on of which you decide yourself. By participating in the examination once, you can provide this proof and submit it to all your applications instead of having to carry out new aptitude tests again and again. You also have the opportunity to show the certificate to the Medical as proof of your psychological suitability.

Cost: Participation in the examination and the DLR Certificate will cost € 386.48 in 2025 (plus VAT at the statutory rate).

Registration: Register by e-mail (see below: Contact: DLR-Certificate Cockpit - Registration). After your registration you will receive the currently available dates and information on further registration steps.

Preparation: You will receive the necessary documents and access data for preparation with the invitation. If possible, divide the number of specified training sessions over three weeks, as distributed learning is more effective.

Contract form: You will receive the contract form with the official invitation. However, you can already view the contract conditions here:

Start/end of examination: The examination starts in Hamburg at 08:00 h in the morning and ends around 17:00 h. The test times at other locations may vary.

Why not online? Due to the special significance of the DLR certificate, only presence testing is possible. You will find standardised and fair test conditions in our examination rooms.

Repetition: You can repeat the participation in the examination for the DLR certificate. We recommend a waiting period of 6 months until the retest. Short-term retests have shown that knowledge, skills and competences usually do not improve. The repetition of a certificate examination is not noted on the certificate. A repeated certificate therefore has the same statement as an initial certificate. If the certificate is repeated, all areas must be repeated. If test performance is worse in a second test, it is therefore quite possible that assessments will deteriorate. It is not possible to "piece together" assessments from different certificate examinations.

If the first certificate is better than the repeated certificate, which one counts? The certificate is valid for two years. Which certificate you use is your decision.

Recognition of language certificates or licenses: For the recognition of language certificates or licenses, please contact the flight school / airline to which you are applying.

Do you also have an assessment center and an interview during the certificate examination? No, only computer-based testing procedures are performed during the certificate examination.

2. Selection level: For further processes, please contact the flight school / airline to which you are applying.

Does everyone get a certificate? Yes, you will receive the certificate approximately 14 days after the examination by mail, provided you have paid the invoice.

Validity: The DLR certificate is valid for two years.

Is it possible to fail the examination? No, the certificate indicates an assessment by reference to the EASA criteria in the areas examined. The certificate does not contain a selection decision.

Minimum age: The minimum age for participation in a certificate examination is 16 years. In this case, DLR's contractual partners are the legal guardians. You can conclude the contract with DLR yourself at the age of 18 and above.

Are the test procedures for the certificate examinations at our test locations identical? The test procedures for the DLR Certificate are identical at all of our test locations.
