DLR Design Challenge 2026
On 20 August, the closing event of the 10th DLR Design Challenge take place. This year’s ambitious task was to develop a small aircraft that would serve as a flexible, flying testbed for future aviation technologies and that could actually be built and flight-tested in the coming years. To bridge the gap between laboratory tests and real-world application, the 16 student teams were given four months to identify key future technologies and integrate them digitally into a modular aircraft that they had to design themselves – and, for the first time, with the opportunity to consult experienced mentors from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The HYDRA demonstrator aircraft, developed by the Technical University of Braunschweig, was selected as the most successful entry in the 10th Design Challenge 2026.
